History of the Organization
The medical community of Greenwood County discussed and debated the need for a freestanding surgical facility beginning in the early 1980's. In 1998, a group of concerned physicians formed an interest group to explore the requirements for such a facility. In 1999, Self Regional Hospital joined with these physicians forming a limited liability corporation* and obtained a Certificate of Need from the state of South Carolina. A site was chosen one block east of the main hospital campus and an ambulatory surgery center became a reality.
In an effort to best meet the surgical needs of ambulatory patients, The Surgery Center at Self Memorial Hospital, LLC, (The Outpatient Surgery Center or TOSC) opened its doors for patient care on July 5, 2001, becoming the first facility of its kind in the Lakeland's Region of South Carolina. TOSC is a multi-specialty facility for surgeons in the areas of Ophthalmology, ENT, General Surgery, GYN, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedics and Urological Surgery.
The Outpatient Surgery Center has been licensed by the state of South Carolina since May 8, 2001. Medicare certification was received July 3, 2001 and patient care was initiated on July 5th. Through June 30, 2007, 30448 patients have received surgical services at our facility.
TOSC serves the seven (7) counties that comprise the Lakelands Region of South Carolina: Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, Laurens, McCormick, Newberry and Saluda.
